Ball valve
Full-bore flow control.
The ball valve is a ported ball seated inside the seacock body, providing a full-bore waterway in the open position and complete shut-off with a quarter-turn of the lever handle.
Full-bore construction is important — a reduced-bore valve creates back-pressure that reduces flow capacity for cooling water intakes and bilge pump discharges. The ball bears against the valve seats in the closed position to create a watertight seal.
The ball surface should be inspected during any seacock service for scoring, pitting, or marine growth deposits that could prevent a clean seal. A valve that cannot achieve full shut-off is a safety hazard on any below-waterline penetration.
