Lever handle
Immediate visual confirmation.
The lever handle operates the ball valve inside the seacock body with a quarter-turn. A lever parallel to the pipeline is open; perpendicular is closed. This immediate visual confirmation is a critical safety feature โ in an emergency, any crew member must be able to identify and close every seacock without hesitation.
Some designs allow the handle to be removed as a security measure when the vessel is unattended. All seacock handles should be exercised โ fully opened and closed โ at minimum monthly intervals to prevent seizure from corrosion or marine growth.
A seized seacock that cannot be closed in an emergency is as dangerous as no seacock at all. If a handle requires excessive force to operate, the stem packing and valve seats should be inspected and the valve serviced before the next passage.
