Gland / packing nut
Compression and control.
The gland nut is a threaded nut that compresses the stem packing material around the valve spindle where it exits the seacock body. Correct adjustment is critical — over-tightening increases friction and can seize the lever handle; under-tightening allows water to weep along the stem.
During routine seacock service, the gland nut is the first adjustment point when stem leakage is observed. A small incremental tightening — typically a quarter-turn — may restore the seal without replacing the packing. If the nut has reached the limit of its thread engagement, the packing must be renewed.
The gland nut should be inspected for corrosion and thread condition at each annual service. A corroded or damaged nut that cannot maintain compression on the packing compromises the entire seacock assembly.
