Stem packing
Sealing the valve spindle.
The stem packing is PTFE or graphite material that seals the valve stem where it exits the seacock body. Without effective packing, water can weep along the spindle even when the ball valve and valve seats are in good condition.
Stem packing is a wear component compressed by the gland nut. Over time, the packing material compresses permanently and loses its sealing ability. Signs of packing failure include water dripping from around the valve stem and increasing resistance when operating the lever handle.
Packing should be inspected at each annual seacock service. Before replacing, check whether the gland nut has adjustment remaining — a small tightening may restore the seal temporarily. Full packing replacement requires removing the valve from service.
